Better Benefits, Better Health for Women

Posted by White House News on 03/24/2011 Views 209

The Affordable Care Act is bringing much needed changes to the insurance market for women. For too long, too many women could not get the affordable, high quality coverage they deserved. Some insurance companies considered simply being a woman a “pre-existing condition” and charged more or covered less.  Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, that’s all changing and women and their families are eligible for important new benefits that will ensure they have access to better care at a lower cost.

Women with insurance will benefit from the law. If you are in a new insurance plan, you can choose the primary care doctor or OB-GYN in your insurer’s network without a referral.  Go to your insurer’s website or call the customer service number to find out which providers are in your network.

Recommended preventive services, like mammograms and flu shots, are now available at no out-of-pocket costs to you, if you are in a new insurance plan. This means that your insurance company cannot charge you a deductible or copays.  Click here to find a list of preventive services that will be covered.

The Affordable Care Act is also making it easier for women to get covered.  Beginning in 2014, the Affordable Care Act makes it illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against anyone with a pre-existing condition or charge women more for coverage than men. And today, if you have been uninsured because of a pre-existing condition, like cancer or being pregnant, you may be eligible to join the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan.  To find out about plans available in your State, please visit: www.pcip.gov

And if you have children, it’s important to know that most health plans cannot deny coverage to children under age 19 because of a pre-existing conditions. Additionally, many young adults can stay on their parent’s family plan until they turn 26.  It doesn’t matter whether they’re married, living with parents, in school, or financially independent.  Visit us on Facebook at: Facebook.com/YoungAdultCoverage to learn more.

These are just a few of the many provisions that guarantee better rights and protections for women and their families. To learn more, check out our Better Benefits, Better Health Initiative. You can also download this flyer.

I am a 52 year old female who is receiving disability benefits from social security. I haven't had a raise since 2007 or 08. Everything has gone up and I am struggling. I have 2 children with me. My son received a bachelors degree in civil engineering from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and my daughter will graduate from Springfield Technical Community College here in Springfield Massachusetts. Ihave worked since I was 17 years old (sometimes working 2 and 3 jobs at a time).

Lisa, SS disability payments got a 5.8 cola in 2009. Plus, the government put an additional $250 check/deposit in each recipient's hands to make the total almost 6%. Which divided over the last year a cola was given and the two one wasn't gives recipients a cost of living increase of about 2% annually. Not great, but then everyone is suffering. Many are out of work. This might be a good time to be thankful for blessings rather than unhappy about lack of more.

I don't know which state you live in, but Florida doesn't have any FREE BENEFITS for women, unless they are on federal or state assistance. After working 44 yrs in private sector, both my husband & I found ourselves laid off in '08. Thank god we lived within our means. However, we have had to cash in 70K of our retirement funds to live on. No job - no insurance. Don't even qualify for patient assistance because we're married. Ins Co's & banks are the biggest thieves in this country.

I wish Kathleen was still in Kansas as our gov. We now have Brownback that is attacking womens health issues. I don't understand how abortion is a federal law, but the states are acting like it doesn't exist. Brownback is closing all our clinics.

I'm sure glad that is happening - about time! When my husband died, we had a small insurance plan that was cashed in, as planned, my health insurance only lasted 2 weeks! Then it was off to that one thats supposed to cover you in-between, but they kept stalling with me, as I had pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes! Who at my age doesn't have something wrong? Then I tried a regular insurance plan, turned down for the same reasons, and the money from the insurance pon
