Seniors And Social Security

A Tribute to Bob Ball

Posted by White House News on 02/24/2011 Views 189

Last Friday, I had the honor to deliver remarks at the dedication of the Robert M. Ball Federal Building in Baltimore. Bob Ball and I first met when, as a young staffer for House Speaker Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr., I was assigned to work on the bipartisan effort to reform and strengthen Social Security that culminated in the 1983 Social Security Reforms. He was the object lesson of how one person - dedicated to learning as much as he could and working as hard as he can - can make a difference, not just in the lives of millions of people, but in the life of the country. For his entire career, across six decades, Bob Ball gave so much of himself -- deep into his own retirement - in order to make sure that millions of Americans could have a dignified retirement.

My full remarks are here and I hope they reflect my great respect for this examplar of public service who represented the best of both career and political leadership in government.

Jack Lew is the Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

for many years both my husband & i paid into ss & now we r both disabled. how can a person with alzheimers disease & a person dependent on oxygen 24/7 even attempt to find a job. we both depend on our ss disability income to live. now i am hearing there is not enough funding to go past 2017..i say bulls--t. congress/senate..take a reduction in pay...give up ur bonus..we put u into office & we the people are able to get u out. President Obama...please don't let this happen to the american people.

I AM CRIPPLED AND 1 OF MY LEGS IS SHORTER THAN THE OTHER, AND 1 OF MY ARMS IS SHORTER, IT STOPPED GROWING AT THE AGE OF 9.I CAN'T GET TO HOT, TO COLD, TO MAD, TO HAPPY OR HAVE ANY KIND OF STRESS WHAT SO EVER OR I WILL GO INTO A "GRANDMA" SEIZURES. YOU TELL ME 1 PLACE THAT WOULD HIRE ME? ALL I HAVE IS MY BENEFITS AND MEDICARE. CUT TAXES FROM THE RICH AND WEALTHY AND THESE BIG BUSINESSES. THEY WOULD'NT MISS IT. THEY WILL GET IT BACK FROM THEIR TAX REFUND. BUT WE ARE THE ONES THAT'S GONNA BE HURT.

I have something else on my mind. you're going to take our S.S. & medicare & medicaid from us, when you can take it from others. You can give the Congress & Senate a paycut & cut taxes out on them along w/ the rich & the big businesses to. If you do that we won't be in debt!! I'd love to sit on my butt and make over $200.000 a yr. and all I have to do is nod and wink and say "ya" or "na". So "Listen up" and do the "Best" thing and leave our benefits alone!! Take it fr. the 1's who won't miss it!

I paid for my Social Security & Medicare benifits for over 50 years out of my pay checks. I along with millions of other Americans put our hard earned dollars into those programs. We didn't have a choice & we trusted the United States Government to safe gaurd those dollars for us...we the people. What did you the government do to those programs? I know you borrowed from Social Security but you borrowed my money & you spent it foolishly because it was easy to get to. You need to fix it NOW!

I know that it is not totally up to you to take social security or medicre care away. There are millions of people trying to lay this on you. We have paid a lot into social-security and expect to get out what we put in. Those that serve in Congress were elected by the people and for the people to have a voice but now days they are just so greedy. Their pay should be frozen. No raises without the people voting it in. No pension or social security unless you payed. No medical unless you insured.

It appears that to "strengthen" Social Security means to take money away from us as we age. Has anyone in the white houseoticed how hard it is to buy food and pay utilities these days? I will starve to death and end up in the street!
